El Fuego del Sol
El Fuego del Sol (FdS) is a sustainable cooking fuel enterprise that began at the Haiti Communitere workshop in 2012. FdS aims to protect the forests of Haiti while promoting the health of its cooks, by providing a safe and sustainable alternative to cooking with charcoal. The charcoal industry is largely responsible for the deforestation of Haiti, widespread pulmonary diseases among women in Haiti, and a lack of competition keeps charcoal prices so high that the average Haitian family spends over 30% of their income on fuel. To provide Haitian cooks with an improved alternative to charcoal, FdS employs Haitians displaced by the 2010 hurricane to produce fuel briquettes made from recycled paper waste, cardboard waste, and sugar cane by-product, as well as special clean-burning eco-stoves. These stoves and briquettes are sold to over 60 schools throughout Port-au-Prince that provide lunch daily to students.
FdS has now moved to a larger facility only minutes from Haiti Communitere and is building an ever-growing network of partners. FdS needs your skills and ideas to help it grow! Volunteers with an interest in environmentalism, recycling systems, social justice and grant writing will find a fulfilling and enriching experience with FdS. Volunteers must be over 18 years of age. FdS is more than willing to help volunteers apply for funding and for college credit.
